BERESTA is an ancient Russian tradition that gives a second life to a tree.

The white birch (Betula papyrifera), Russia’s emblematic tree, has been an integral part of daily life since the 10th century. Birch was widely used in medicine, writing, and for practical purposes such as roof insulation, flooring, walls, stationery, decorations, jewelry, clothing, toys, and even Russian cuisine — with birch sap being a beloved delicacy.

Renowned for its natural waterproof and antiseptic properties, birch bark (called BERESTA) has long been valued for crafting kitchen utensils and tableware. By the 15th century, artistic techniques like painting, cutting, embossing, and relief sculpting on bark became an essential part of Russia’s cultural heritage.

The bark is carefully harvested from dead trees and processed to become pliable, creating a unique “canvas” for artistic expression. The greatest challenge lies in envisioning an image within the natural patterns of the bark — working with its delicate horizontal stripes, dark markings, and scars — and using minimal paint to let nature’s design shine through. While artists can paint any subject, traditional themes often feature winter landscapes and birch trees themselves, honoring the tree’s deep cultural significance.
